ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, Nj. (KTLA) -- Skippy parent company Unilever announced a recall of certain batches of its popular peanut butter for possible Salmonella contamination, the FDA said Friday.

The limited recall of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread was initiated after a sample of the batch came up positive for a strain of salmonella bacteria.

The recall applies only to these branded items distributed in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The affected jars are as follows:

Salmonella is an organism that can cause fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of serious and sometimes fatal infections.

No illnesses have been reported.

Customers are urged to dispose of the recalled products and call Unilever for a replacement coupon.

FDA did not release the total number of products affected by the recall. Customers can contact the company for more information at 1-800-453-3432.
