For the first time since 1993, Notre Dame is at the top of the heap in the college football world.

The Fighting Irish earned the #1 ranking in the latest Associated Press poll released Sunday afternoon.

Notre Dame is a perfect 11-0 after shutting out Wake Forest at home Saturday, 38-0.

That combined with Oregon’s 17-14 overtime home loss to Stanford and Kansas State’s 52-24 stunning blowout defeat at Baylor catapulted the Irish to the top spot heading in to their final regular season game at USC next Saturday.

Notre Dame was a unanimous No. 1, earning all 60 first-place AP votes.

Alabama, upset by Texas A&M 29-24 just last week, moved back to No. 2.

Georgia, Ohio State and Oregon round out the top five.

Florida is 6th ahead of Kansas State, LSU, Texas A&M and Florida State.

USC fell out of the top 25 after its 38-28 loss Saturday to crosstown rival UCLA.

The BCS poll, which determines which two teams will play in the national championship game on January 7, will be released tonight. CBS Sports is projecting Notre Dame a solid #1 ahead of Alabama. Georgia, Florida and Oregon are the other projected top 5 teams in the BCS standings.

Kickoff for the Notre Dame-USC game next Saturday night is scheduled for just after 8 p.m. EST.
