Prolific and multi-dimensional, Eliza Gilkyson has been steadily releasing smart, melodic folk-rock since the late ‘80s. On Roses At the End of Time she explores an assortment of textures and moods to create a balanced album filled with finely crafted songs. Her diversity and creative restlessness are on full display here. “Blue Moon Night” and “Death in Arkansas” unfold slowly and carefully, “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” grooves to a lazy shuffle beat supported by trombone and dobro, and she uses loops and drum machines to great effect on “Belle of the Ball” and “Once I Had a Home.” With the voice of a true storyteller she intertwines social and personal topics through vivid, intelligent lyrics as on the energetic “Looking for a Place” and “Vayan al Norte,” which tells the tale of illegal immigrants.
