While the Staten Island native’s seventh album continues to showcase the fresh, shimmering folk-pop that made her a grassroots sensation, it also delves into new, darker territory. Bright, indie-pop hits and Michaelson’s charmingly distinct goofiness are present and accounted for in the twinkling “Light Me Up” and sweet-and-sour breakup anthem “Hell No,” which sit seamlessly alongside bittersweet odes to her late mother (“I Remember Her”) and frank, string-filled reminiscences of her divorce (“Old Days”).
